Head of School Update - Vaccination Mandate on Campus

Aloha Ho`ala `Ohana,

I hope this message finds you and your family well and staying safe.  We continue to monitor the rise in COVID-19 positive cases and follow the guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hawai’i Department of Health and the Department of Human Services. Our primary concern, at this time, is to keep our students, faculty, and staff safe and healthy.  While our intention is to remain open as long as possible, all teachers and staff are preparing to transition to virtual instruction if Governor Ige mandates another statewide shutdown.  In addition, as a result of the surge in positive COVID cases, the Ho`ala Board of Trustees unanimously approved the following policy:

All eligible individuals, adults and children, in order to maintain a healthy and safe school environment, must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or be tested weekly and show proof of a negative COVID test.  All visitors who will have close contact with Ho`ala students, faculty, and staff must show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test that was administered in the last 72 hours. The cost of testing is the responsibility of the individual.

This policy will go into effect the morning of Friday, September 3rd, 2021.  What this means for the entire Ho`ala community is that we are strongly encouraging all who are eligible to get vaccinated.  Our students, when they become eligible, will also be encouraged to get vaccinated and the school has applied to the Department of Health to become a vaccination clinic.  Any visitor who is essential to the operation of the school and will have close contact with students, faculty and staff must also be vaccinated or show proof of a negative COVID-19 test administered within the last three days.

Ho`ala’s Academic Open House is currently postponed until further notice.  I know I speak for the entire faculty and staff in expressing our deep disappointment in not being able to host this important event.  We truly enjoy sharing what makes Ho`ala special and will do everything in our power to ensure that families have an opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and meet their child’s teacher in the future.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate the challenging landscape of operating under a pandemic.

The Education Committee will be meeting later this month to discuss the school’s COVID-19 Protocols and make recommendations to the Head of School.  As in the past, you are always welcome to email me directly at chris@hoalaschool.org or call (808) 621-1898 if you have any questions or concerns.

In closing, I am deeply grateful for all your support and understanding as we continue to keep our students and staff healthy and safe.

Warm regards,
