Phyllis Norton Retirement Announcement

Dear Ho`ala `Ohana,

In January 2020 I wrote to our school board about my intention to retire on July 31, 2020. Only a few short months later our nation was hit with an unprecedented situation as Covid-19 spread across the world. As the situation worsened, I predicted that my retirement could cause additional turmoil to Ho`ala so I decided to stay on as the Head of School for another year.

I am very proud of how our school community handled the changes that we faced in dealing with Covid-19. The new normal has set in and we are running very smoothly. Things are looking up for enrollment next year and our financial situation is on the mend.

With that said, I feel like it is a better time for me to retire this summer. I have informed our school board that my last day will be Monday, May 31, 2021. They have compiled a Head of School Search Committee and have received quite a bit of interest in the position. I know all the committee members and feel confident that they will make a choice that is best for our students, families, and staff.

My reasons for retirement remain the same as before. Family. I miss my children and my siblings now more than ever. With the passing of my father last summer, I feel the need to be closer to family and for David and me to continue with our plans of traveling the world.

Being the Head of Ho`ala School has been a true blessing for me. It hasn’t been the easiest job I’ve ever had but it has been by far the most fulfilling, both professionally and personally. I wake up every day excited to go to work; not many people can say that!

I am blessed to have the most amazing children and families at our school. Thank you for your support and trust in Ho`ala School to not only educate your child/ren, but to allow us to help them grow into independent, compassionate, and responsible adults.

My commitment to Ho`ala School will continue to be steadfast. I will support the school in the transition of my position, whether it be from here on island or from the Mainland, and for anything else that is needed. Ho`ala School will forever remain in my heart!

Mahalo nui loa,
